This is about the BEST USB Serial Adaptor I've used so far. Working in the telecom industry we've had a number of these units over the years as most laptops no longer have a serial port on them.
The biggest benefit is being able to see the datasets on the physical side. Visually identifying transmit and receive can save a tremendous amount of guess work on determining which direction to look when isolating problems. Is it the device, laptop or the adaptor?

With visual indicators confirming the physical connections is priceless.
