This USB 2.0 RS-232 Serial Adapter is the easiest way to add a serial port to your computer. Newer computers today are unequipped to support peripherals requiring a serial RS-232 connection because they lack serial ports; this affects PDA, digital camera, and GPS type equipment that may be used on your system. -
Excellent, Tried on multiple legacy switches and storage devices and worked flawlessly. Windows 10 & 11 both worked plug n play. No driver needed.
Quality Value Price - 5.0 out of 5 stars Very prompt delivery
-
Used to connect my PC to a device that only had a RS232 coms port.
Quality Value Price - 5.0 out of 5 stars Works on Dell G7
-
I consoled my Dell G7 to a Juniper switch using this and it worked just fine. Had no issues with driver and/or compatibility.
Quality Value Price - 5 stars for it WORKS and QUICKLY, but 4 stars for my wish list (see below).
-
5 stars for it WORKS and QUICKLY, but 4 stars for my wish list.
Previously, I tried another competitor (that I bought at the local store), which should be "new", but it doesn't work in Window 11 (after 2 or 3 hours working in the driver and researching, etc.).
So, I tried at USBGear -- It works quickly after installing the driver!
Wish list: The power LED is blue, which has too much brightness. It's only an indicator of power status, not a Christmas decoration. Also, the RS-232 signal indicators (orange) have an issue with too much brightness. Well, the real issue is the distance from the board to the lens. It has "parallax" from one lens to another. You look straight above, which is ok, but you look a bit slanted, which is a signal from another lens.Quality Value Price - Works just as it should
-
Works just as it should. Drivers worked, indicator lights are very helpful.
Quality Value Price - Easy to use, ready to go.

PERFECT
Quality Value Price - INCREDIBLE
-
I needed to have an adapter for a Windows 7 device to an ancient device AND IT WORKED WITH THIS ADAPTER. Nothing else has worked so far. I am indebted to this device. I will have a special slide dedicated to this adapter when I graduate from my PhD.
Quality Value Price - They work...
-
Quality construction and pretty blinky LEDs that tell you when you've got your DB9 breakout wired up incorrectly. XD
Quality Value Price - Breakout box and cable all in one
-
Serial communications are no long as common as they once were, but for those of us who work on serially-attached equipment, a good cable is a must. This adapter combines a full DB9 interface with LED indicators for each signal. In my work I’d have need to get out a scope or logic analyzer to determine which signals are present on which lines, but this adapter makes it readily obvious.
Quality Value Price - that device is working, what not always true for others
-
simple, extra information and works
Quality Value Price - Use to communicate with fire panel
-
I needed this to help program and diagnose a fire alarm panel. I initially wired my connector incorrectly and could not get any communication. Thanks to the lights on this adapter I was able to quickly diagnose my mistake and get my programming done. I had originally used a more expensive adapter from a local store but couldn't get any communication and thought it was defective (which I later learned was my mistake). If you need a USB to serial, this is the only way to go!
Quality Value Price - Works
-
I was hesitant but I'm glad I got it
Quality Value Price - Sturdy cable allows me to much easier retrieve logs from servers
-
Works like a champ
Quality Value Price - IMO FTDI works better than Prolific
-
I bought this RS-232 adapter to replace a similar device that was based on the Prolific chip. The Prolific seems to be getting increasingly difficult to get working in Windows 10/11 OS. Not sure what's changed but I grew tired enough of it that I decided to give this FTDI-based unit a try. I'm pleased to say that it works perfectly. I use it for programming a variety PLC devices (ATOS solenoid drivers, etc). Another great feature is the line activity lights that show whether or not signal is present on each individual conductor of the RS-232 connector. This, I have found quite useful in troubleshooting and simpler than software-based solutions.
Quality Value Price - Just what I needed
-
Bought this for shop so we can service Espar heaters that we install inside our semi trucks. Once it I have all I had to do was plug, confirm some settings and we were off the races the races. Great product, easy to use!
Quality Value Price - Blinking diodes nice feature
-
I like the blinking diodes that let me know the cable is working.
Quality Value Price - perfect for older PLC connections.
-
Bought this for work. Its a great smart serial converter.
Quality Value Price - Everything you need
-
Unit arrived as described and early. The best part is that it contained a thoughtfully prepared software disc with documentation for installation and even modification of the included drivers for any system you may have including Linux and Mac. I was sufficiently impressed to write a review. I will definitely buy from these guys again.
Quality Value Price - status lights are a plus
-
Just plug it in and it works. Using it with both Ubuntu and AlmaLinux for access to comm device console.
Quality Value Price - Works with my RTSYSTEMS programing software for my radios
-
Works with all my laptops which no longer have DB9 COM PORTS. Use it to program software on my radios.
Quality Value Price - Saved the day
-
One of our computers died and it had this serial device connected to it. The new computer did not come with any serial ports as expected. I purchased this device to convert the USB to RS232 and for our surprise it worked very well and we are back in business. Fully Supports linux, android, mac, windows CE, and regular windows from XP to 10 64-bit.
Quality Value Price - Great serial to USB
-
If you have a need for a serial port this adapter works great! It even works on a Windows tablet I have connected to my weather station.
Quality Value Price - Worked exactly as advertised.
-
Delivered promptly, worked as expected.
Quality Value Price - This is in response to Raymond P Bilsky.

You say your seasoned, I've been working with PC equipment since the late 80s. And I know 100% for sure they get it right. If you look at the back of a PC equipped with a Male DB9 RS232 Serial Port you WILL notice that they all have have the same threaded nuts that this thing has. They did NOT get it wrong, that is how a Male DB9 RS232 Serial Port is setup. the Female that plugs into this has the thumb screws that thread into the threaded nuts that it has. I've been doing IT work for over 30 years and that is the serial port standard. You probably have the wrong cord or something that uses a proprietary connection
Quality Value Price - Serial to USB with visual indicators!
-
Just like a generic Serial to USB, but much better with the LED status! It helped me diagnose a wiring issue with the serial port I was working with. Great value, great product. Seems solid and very reliable.
Quality Value Price - Worked on my computer assisted Dobby.
-
I needed to connect to my computer assisted Dobby for my AVL loom
Quality Value Price - I'd give it 6 stars Came with driver SIMPLE to use!
-
USB to Serial port Old cord went bad so if having problem get a new adapter as first correction
Quality Value Price - Worked just fine
-
Work fine with windows 10 no problem
Quality Value Price - Very Good
-
Easy to use
Quality Value Price - The lights are upside down!
-
It seems to work fine, though I haven't used it much yet. BUT, the lights that are supposed to show on the top, show on the bottom of the unit. The PCB has obviously been put into the case upside down by whoever/whatever put it together. A couple of other purchasers have mentioned the same thing.Sorry, it's not the best photo, but you can see that the light is shining out the bottom. There's no light on the top surface.
Quality Value Price - RS232-USB adapter
-
Isn't compatible with as many things as my Kingspan one, but it is much cheaper. It works well for interfacing with the serial port on my supercharger boost controller.

Quality Value Price - Great for ADTPro!
-
I had used several cheaper USB to Serial/DB9 adapters to try and communicated with old Apple II hardware, using ADTPro, with little luck - and on a whim, thought I’d give this adapter a try, and it worked beautifully! If you’re trying to use ADTPro, save yourself time and frustration and spring a few extra dollars and get this adapter!
Quality Value Price - Great for adding serial ASCII communication to a system.
-
It works well for ASCII, but doesn't like bit oriented serial protocols.
Quality Value Price - This Adapter Works While Others Did Not
-
After trying unsuccessfully for hours to get a different RS232-to-USB adapter to work, I was able to install the Gearmo adapter and get it running in perhaps 10 minutes. It also came with its own driver DVD which was appreciated after so much trouble with the other adapter, wondering if indeed I had found the best driver.
Quality Value Price - FTDI Chipset, 5V signaling (not 3.3) so works with everything
-
This was my third attempt to find a serial converter for a project at work. The first worked fine for everything I connected it to - except the device I needed to connect, the second used counterfeit chips (Returned for full refund), and this was the third.Short version - If the Rx to the computer works, but the Tx from the computer doesn't, you may need to get a 5V adapter (like this one). The RS-235 spec says up to 25V, so 5V is safe for anything. (3.3V is sometimes to low to be considered "high")
Quality Value Price - Easy to use with the built in OS support of the FTDI chip.
-
Easy to use with the built in OS support of the FTDI chip. The Status lights are handy to keep your direction straight
Quality Value Price - Works extremely well.
-
I have bought more than a dozen different USB-RS-232 adaptors, and this one is my favorite. Works every time on three different computers.
Quality Value Price - Perfect
-
works easy. needed it for old dos equipment.
Quality Value Price - Breathes life back into RS-232 devices!
-
I can, once again, use many of my old electronics that require a serial port! Works well.
Quality Value Price - Do not buy any other brand, Buy this one
-
This unit has the ftdi chipset. We use theseFor industrial equipment and they work perfectly and reliability
Quality Value Price - Best USB to RS232 hands down
-
I been looking for a good USB to RS232 for a while and played with a few options, this one hands down is the BEST.Having the LED indicators on the plug helps with troubleshooting and avoiding second guessing on what is going wrong. If you are a maker or work with old industrial connections this is a MUST to have tool in your toolset.
Quality Value Price - It work just as good as shop $75.00 cable that shop has
-
Can't go wrong for the money !!!
Quality Value Price - Just what I needed.

Easy to use.
Quality Value Price - Easy to Use with Windows 10
-
This was plug and play with Windows 10 which is exactly what I was looking for. The status lights for each terminal are handy for debugging serial connections.
Quality Value Price - Excellence, sleek
-
Great product!
Quality Value Price - Works great with Fadal 4020 Vertical milling center
-
This is the only adapter I have found that works flawlessly with rs-232 communication. I use it to load CNC programs directly thru a rs-232 port on the machine. Other adapters I've tried for some reason I had to unplug from the USB port to send another program or it would lock up sending the next program. This one works every time. This is my second one, the first one I left at another job.
Quality Value Price - USB adapter
-
I had problems with others adapters, not this one it works perfectly
Quality Value Price - works as a link for Amiga to PC
-
not much to say, its a usb to serial with ACT indication, i got mine as a way to interface my amiga with modern computer hardware, and it works. was able to get data back and forth.
Quality Value Price - Works

Worked great to communicate with microsquirt on a ls swap.
Quality Value Price - What is with Amazon ratings? Sheerness, Thickness for an electronic product
-
This is crazy, no? Please clean up your rate features page! These USB to serial converters are excellent. They work with Win 10 and do the job day after day. I will reorder without hesitation when I need more. The whole line has been superb, doing just what they are supposed to without hiccough or excessive configuration.
Quality Value Price - Worked perfectly
-
Windows 10 on my laptop: immediately identified device as a COM port with no additional drivers required. Immediately connected to my Parker SSD motor drive using their DSE Lite tool, no issues what so ever. This is the FTDI USB-RS232 adapter you need!
Quality Value Price - Use RS 232 interface with new technology.
-
I bought this item in order to communicate with a older piece of electronic gear that has an RS 232 interface and no USB connecting ability. This solves the problem of using outmoded but still valuable gear and interface using this USB to RS 233 item.
Quality Value Price - Tricky to configure - worth the effort
-
Very nice product. Downside, using Windows 7 I had to go to the web to get drivers. This was not obvious. I suspect a non computer geek may have troubles configuring this to work. Also can with CD so if you don’t have an optical drive then you will have to download.Once configured works like a champ and I can once again connect to my Bernina Artista 180.
Quality Value Price - Works, but quality can be better

Quality Value Price - Gearmo USB to Serial adapter works very well!
-
It didn't come with installation instructions. I had to have a friend install it for me.
Quality Value Price - Works great

Worked when other models did not.
Quality Value Price - Worked perfectly and saved my business ton of money
-
I own a veterinary practice and we have a digital radiology unit that has two monitors one of which is a touchscreen that is used to set the parameters for radiographs. The com port that the monitor was attached to stopped functioning, so by using this cable serial adapter we were able to transfer the monitor connection and function to a usb port. To repair/replace the card with a new com port on our special computer was estimated to be in the neighborhood of 800 to 1,000 dollars. Less than 30 dollars was a real bargain. Converting over to this cable connection was quick and easy.
Quality Value Price - Gearmo USB RS-232 Serial Adapter w/ LED Indicators Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP, 2000
-
Not really sure if this product has met our needs yet as the person who was going to test this out has left the company. Ooops. When we have a greater/more urgent need to use this, we'll test it then, and maybe remember to update the review. Sorry- I know- not much help.
Quality Value Price - Good product
-
Excellent product and easy to use.
Quality Value Price - Works to convert RS232 to USB.
-
I have a module that has RS232 and that is the only way to program it. Tried a couple other RS232 converters that I had but they didn't work with this particular module so I bought one of these Gearmo USB RS-232 Serial Adapters and works with no problem.
Quality Value Price - It Works
-
I couldn't be more pleased with this converter. I tried 2 other brands that really made me want to just give up on USB to serial converters. The first one I tried i got from eBay. It was a total loss. The second one I bought at best buy and it uses the Prolific chip set. I cant stress enough that if the converter you are looking at has the prolific chip set STAY AWAY!!! It is the most frustrating thing I have ever tried to get working on a PC. Luckily I was able to return it after 3 days of trying different drivers. Then I did some research and i found this converter. It has saved my bacon! I plugged it in, loaded the driver, and It worked correctly. Crazy part is I paid less for the this one than the others. Also I have used it on Widows 10, window 7, and Mac Its Works on all of these OS like it should
Quality Value Price - Fast and easy. Plug-and-play on my Thinkpad
-
Did not have to fo anything except plug it into my computer and like magic, my device connected.
Quality Value Price - Works with windows 10
-
Works with windows 10, The lights really help when you’re troubleshooting.
Quality Value Price - It works where others fail
-
I used this to connect my laptop to stepper motor drivers which require serial input to change settings. Two other adapters failed and this one worked straight away with no tweaking.
Quality Value Price - Good serial adapter.
-
Worked well. Performed as desired.
Quality Value Price - Worked as advertised
-
Worked perfectly with Windows 10
Quality Value Price - Works Well
-
Use it at work several times per week.
Quality Value Price - Great quality
-
Great quality. The usb to serial connector comes with a cd so no need to look for drivers online. Well packed . The product works very well and glad I got it. Well worth the price.
Quality Value Price - Works as Expected
-
Took it out of the bag. Plugged it into the computer. Hooked up from the Serial port from my machine, CNC Router. Works as I had hoped it will. No problems thus far, it's been about a week.
Quality Value Price - Plug 'n Play
-
I was worried after reading the install manual that it would be difficult to install this on my corporate, well-locked-down, Windows 7 workstation. Not so. I plugged it into a USB port, and Windows Update downloaded the 2 drivers needed. A reboot was all I needed to have a new COM4 port. Thanks guys! I hope it goes as well when I get upgraded to Windows 10 (which I am trying to postpone as long as possible).
Quality Value Price - If you are connecting to a female port with fastener posts the product will not fit
-
The product is male with female fastening posts, so if you are connecting to a device that is female with female fasteners already on it, this will not be able to connect.
Quality Value Price - Don't cheap out and buy this one
-
I use serial to communicate with a lot of older test equipment, and many of the older systems require precise timing to work properly. This serial adapter has worked flawlessly with everything I have tested it on including older Icom receivers and LeCroy LT series oscilloscopes. It has the real FTDI chipset, and works well. The indicator lights are nice to see if the unit is talking, though I don't use it for testing directly like some others. If you're looking for an adapter get this one, you will probably have trouble using the other "cheap" ones like I did!
Quality Value Price - High Quality
-
Excellent product, easy to use plug and play. My only gripe is that it could have been longer for my specific needs?
Quality Value Price - Works with windows 10 pro
-
Great cable, easy install and leds allow you to know the cable is working fine.
Quality Value Price - Excellent
-
One of the best FDTI USB-serial cable with LED indication in my experience. I used it for serial communication testing and configuration. I highly recommend it
Quality Value Price - Works great!
-
Arrived on time, as ordered, was easy to install & works perfectly with Windows 10 OS. Cost a little more than last ones but we'll worth it. Used to interface radio/computer. Recommend.
Quality Value Price - RS-232 Problem Solver
-
Worked flawlessly as promised right out of the box. No issues associating the drivers. As distinct from other similar products, is completely transparent to Windows, whatever software (or terminal emulator) you're using and the hardware you're configuring. LED indicators are definitely value added.
Quality Value Price - Works great but the USB C side is a little cheap.
-
This product works as advertised but I wish the Type C connector was more robust. The male metal element, that is inserted into a type C slot, is not well attached the the rest of the housing. It has always been a little bit loose but I needed the converter so I put it into service.
Quality Value Price - Works perfectly.
-
Excellent USB to Serial programming cable. Plug and play with Windows 10.Stay away from Prolific chipsets and pick an FTDI based cable like this one.Since this does not have the typical male screws to secure it to a DB9 female port (it has two female screw mounts / standoffs), I did have to forcibly remove the screw mounts / standoffs to actually use it with the device I needed to program (see pic). The indicator LEDs are a nice addition as well.
Quality Value Price - Plug and Play on MacOS Mojave
-
This USB-C to serial adaptor worked perfectly on my Mac OS Mojave. No drivers needed. Used the very basic but functional "screen" command from the terminal App and was able to console into various Cisco gear like a champ. Lights for the pins are nice feedback for the serial comms. Excellent tool.
Quality Value Price - 64bit drivers for Win 10.
-
My old one didn't have the proper Win 10 64bit drivers. Searching the internet was a dead end. This one has the correct drivers and works fine.
Quality Value Price - great price
-

Quality Value Price - As advertised

As advertised
Quality Value Price - Make the old systems new
-
Need to attach older peripherals to newer computers and works well.
Quality Value Price - Easy software setup - inadequate mounting methods
-
Installed easily with Windows computer system. Requires a USB socket on the computer not an expansion USB socket device that adds more ports to a computer. Requires a direct plug-in.Also it seems to assume you will be plugging into another cord as it will not plug into a regular DB9 socket that expect the screws to be attached to the plug for holding it to the computer. Press fit only requires removal of the two hex mounting nuts.
Quality Value Price - Works Great
-
I Love it when USB Equipment actually works.I run 8 serial ports now for monitoring a communication program.

Quality Value Price - Great interface tool!
-
Great little unit for router work!
Quality Value Price - Worked great as soon as I plugged it in.
-
I plugged it in and it immediately started detecting for the drivers, and worked once the drivers were installed, I didn't even have to put in the CD. Installed as Com3 and works perfectly for me.
Quality Value Price - Works, but!
-
Purchased this RS232 adapter to use between a windows 10 computer, and a ham transmitter. No problems connecting to computer everything worked flawlessly once parameters were setup in software unit keyed transmitter via a opto coupler without issue, except one minor problem RFI. The RFI was minor but was there so that's why I can't give it a 5 star rating.
Quality Value Price - #1

well done
Quality Value Price - This will work with Yaesu FT-450/AT/D models to communicate with PC.
-
I bought a Yaesu FT-450AT from a local ham and he gave me a serial2usb adapter and it did not work. After a bit of googling and reading I was linked to this from a website. I was told there is would work and based on that I ordered it. When it arrived and I got it hooked up to the radio and pc after a few seconds it started to let the radio talk to the computer and vice versa. Very much recommend this if you are trying to connect a amateur radio to your pc. I found some of the others available just won't let the radio and pc communicate.
Quality Value Price - Perfect for computers without a serial port
-
I use this device everyday with my Panasonic toughbook 54. I have NOT ran into any issues with this product and have been using it for over a year.
Quality Value Price - Great quality and doesn't drop connection
-
I have had at least 4 different USB to serial adapters over the years. The connections would drop and wait for something to move, then find out you had to reset the adapter. This Gearmo adapter has worked flawlessly since purchase and has yet to drop a single connection. I count on this for equipment configuration for work and am so impressed, I just ordered a Gearmo USB to dual serial adapter. Highly recommend this adapter.
Quality Value Price - Gearmo USB RS-232 Serial Adapter

Quality Value Price - Fantastic unit

Loading the standard drivers was easy, worked right away. Thing thing I like most about this unit and why I purchased it in the first place was the LED showing activity. No more guessing if the interface was connected and communicating properly.

Quality Value Price - Works great with Linux

I have used this with Linux laptops and desktops for a variety of instances where I needed a temporary serial connection to work on some hardware. The status lights on the case are icing on the cake, reminding me of the serial break-out boxes we used way back in the olden days.

This is a great USB to serial. It works great. The only drawback is that it has the hex screw which needed to be remove in order to work. This product need to be redesign with the thumb screws and it would get a 5 stars from me.

Saved my behind as I program a lot of twoway radios and most use serial port. Most laptops don't have serial ports. Worked like a charm.
Quality Value Price - Great device for adding a serial (COM port) to your computer
-
After you install drivers (for Win 7 64 bit) from the CD, it works great. I have 3 other devices called Serial Gears to convert a USB to a COM port for serial devices, this one works just as good, very handy.
Quality Value Price - Finally, a solution for modern computers needing a serial port!
-
Works on my laptop with Windows 10, perfectly. Other dongles with the Prolific chipsets (2303 or otherwise) all were extremely problematic and would either fail to register as a COM port or would potentially crash the computer, altogether. This isn't just a "Windows issue" because I have other co-workers who need COM ports and own Macs, and the Prolific was a pain with them as well. This adapter, however, worked out of the box with no additional drivers and I have yet to have any issues with it.

Quality Value Price - Highly recommended

As a Network Engineer working with Cisco products it is necessary for me to have a serial port available to console into routers and switches and new notebooks no longer have a serial port as a standard feature so USB serial adapters are required. If you just have a cable then if the console port does not come up then you have to figure out if it is the notebook or the console port that is causing the issue. Having the LED breakout indicators makes this much easier. I highly recommend this product.

Works great for many uses. Authentic FTDI based chipset, so it works without a fight on both OSX, Windows and Linux. We use it with many different switches and network gear.
Quality Value Price - Great product
-
Bought this one to replace a Prolific adapter that does not work well, used for several hours without issue
Quality Value Price - Status LEDs are very useful
-
The combination of the FTDI controller which is solid and ubiquitous (you likely already have the driver loaded) and the status LEDs for each signal line make this a great debugging tool. The blue power LED is a bit too bright (aren't they always) but it does make it easy to tell if the device is connected. The materials aren't fancy but feel solid and the cable is seems rugged enough. This one costs a bit more but if you think you might want to see what's going on with your serial comms then this one is worth it.

Finally a Serial to USB adapter that works flawlessly with Windows 10. I was trying to use an old Gigaware adapter and even with drivers that would load in Windows 10, it would still crash my machine. This has been working flawlessly so far and I am confident it solved my issue.
Quality Value Price - Easy to troubleshoot a serial connection problem with this.

Quality Value Price - A Must have for PC techs
-
This is a must-have for all PC techs and field work for troubleshooting sensors and RS232 devices. This has the legtimate chipset with real drivers that aren't blocked by MS. I love the status lights (that have proved reversed wiring before for me) and the ease of installation. I've had others and this is the one I kept. Use it with Putty (a free form of Hyperterm) and you'll be happy with your terminal screen every time.

Purchased this to attach the Singer Professional Sew-Ware v2 embroidery card reader/writer to my Windows 7 computer. Although I was able to install it (using the device manager to search for the drivers on the CD), the embroidery software was not able to find its device. Therefore, I am returning the adapter and purchasing another brand that a reviewer says works with the PSW software and hardware.

Quality Value Price - Visual Datasets
-
This is about the BEST USB Serial Adaptor I've used so far. Working in the telecom industry we've had a number of these units over the years as most laptops no longer have a serial port on them.
The biggest benefit is being able to see the datasets on the physical side. Visually identifying transmit and receive can save a tremendous amount of guess work on determining which direction to look when isolating problems. Is it the device, laptop or the adaptor?
With visual indicators confirming the physical connections is priceless.Quality Value Price - Dependable and handles null signals

Works great, no issues with Windows 10. I'm happy. One nit I will pick though is that the sticker with the LED indicator labels was installed in a somewhat misaligned position so if you're looking at the device form the wrong angle you could mistakenly believe that the wrong indicators are illuminated... I started peeling up the label to shift it back over to where it's supposed to be but the adhesive wouldn't have been good for a 2nd application so it's staying where it is.

-
I tried installing Windows 10 and my prior Prolific usb to serial adapter did not work with Windows 10. I actually often had trouble with it working in Windows 7 after each update too as the drivers were constantly prone to errors. Apparently the makers of those devices have abandoned them. As far as this GearMo USB RS-232 Serial Adapter goes, I can confirm that it is plug and play with Windows 10. I first installed it on Windows 7 prior to the upgrade (simply plugged the usb in and Windows found the proper drivers). I then went into device manager and changed the com port and baud rate in device manager to the proper com port and baud rate. I then did the Windows 10 upgrade. After the Windows 10 upgrade I just needed to go back into device manager and update the driver. Boom, works now perfectly. I can only assume that it would also be plug and play with Windows 10 if you simply plug it in and Windows will find the drivers. But anyway, I am using this now on Windows 10. I am a very happy camper. I had years of frustration with the Prolific usb driver and am so happy to be with GearMo FTDI chip technology. Thank you so much GearMo!!!!!

I purchased this cable adapter in Nov 2014 and started using it in Jan 2015. While it took a bit to get the drivers loaded onto my tablet, once I managed it, the cable worked fine. At least until July 2015 when it went completely dead. Fortunately, I had purchased another cable from a different vendor (Valley Enterprises USB to RS232 Serial DB9 Cable Adapter FTDI Chipset) so could continue working. We'll see if this cable will last more than a measly 6 months!
As a side note. I had to download FTDI drivers from online to make these cables work with some of my equipment, but for other it worked fine with the supplied drivers. http://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htmQuality Value Price - Best drivers for multiples Windows versions

love it, using it with a rs-232 to rs-485 adapter, and that is actually working better than a dedicated usb->rs485 adapter I tried. Also love the lights on this thing, you can really see if something is happening or not, which, for my application, and coming from an adapter that didn't work at all for me, was a nice improvement to know it's actually doing something.

The traffic lights are a nice touch since I work on some old flaky equipment that locks up when you are programming it. Tried two others before this one and yea the FTDI chip is the only major difference. This one has the FTDI and it worked where others would not.
Blue plastic is medium grade and feels like it will break with rough use. I work in the field and it will be used roughly.
Even though the plastic is not the most durable and feels like it will break I give it five stars because for the price it is not an issue to have a spare or two on hand.Quality Value Price - Five Stars

Quality Value Price - A great USB to RS-232 interface that does what it should.
-
Ordered this to interface my amateur radio to my computer. Initially I have tried to use other brands of interfaces to hook up the RS-232 interface on my radio to my computer and always seemed to have some glitches. Since most if not all computers have now decided to remove the serial interface from their systems, it has become more difficult to interface some of the radios that still rely on the RS-232 interface. This unit fills the bill. I plugged it in to my windows 7 system and it immediately started loading the necessary drivers. I was hooked up and communicating in just a few minutes. It also has handshake indicator lights in case a problem arises. All in all a first class unit that does the job quickly and effectively.

This is a high-quality and highly functioning adapter. That being said, the included drivers were ridiculous (Win 98, Win CE, 2000, XP, and that's it... what, no Windows Bob?) but they worked with Windows 7 just fine anyhoo. After 3 failed attempts with other "reputable name" USB-to-RS232 adapters, I'm finally able to get my MicroLogix 1000 PLCs talking to my laptops. The key was to eliminate the Prolific brand chipset from the equation and bring on the high quality FTDI chipset this adapter sports. The serial line signal activity LEDs are a plus.

Shows up without a driver install under Windows 7 and Windows 98 SE under VMWare. Beautiful.
The length of the USB cable makes it easy to plug straight into whatever machine you're hooking up to, but because it has the thumbscrew sockets on it, and whatever you're plugging into will as well, it's impossible to use without an extension cable. I opened mine up and removed the sockets. It's uglier now, but more useful for me.Quality Value Price - Four Stars

I've used this RS-232 Serial converter for connecting to Cisco networking devices and various other networking equipment that utilizes a console port. This device was able to connect to all of them flawlessly. It was able to auto-detect the baud rate to apply for the connection and whether or not flow control was needed, which was reflected on the LEDs for each device connection. I also used this cable to xmodem a IOS file to an old Cisco Catalyst 2960 switch. This is a genuine FTDI chipset used in this device, http://hackaday.com/2014/10/22/watch-that-windows-update-ftdi-drivers-are-killing-fake-chips/ this link listed the drivers that affect fake FTDI chips. I updated my adapter to use the latest version that would "brick" the device and it is still detected and functions perfectly. I also made use of this adapter in linux using putty and cutecom and it detects perfectly as well, no need to modprobe usbserial vendor=0x???? product=0x???? it is plug and play.

I've been running this thing continuasly for about a month interfacing my weather station to a computer and have had flawless operation. The Prolific version constantly crashed on Win7 home and pro. As a former IT Manager I thought that I could make the old one work, but the problem was the driver and no version I could find would fix it in Windows. Works like a charm. Lets me connect my PC to industrial equipment which have only RS-232 9 pin ports. Windows 7 automatically installed drivers without need for the included disk.

I bought one of the cheaper USB/RS232 converters and had a lot of problems. It worked, but the drivers sucked up so much CPU, that the whole machine ran soooooo sloooow, thus rendering the application useless, as serial data was lost. With this guy (using the FTDI Chip) everything worked right off. I didn't need the LEDs, but i've been in plenty of RS232 situations where the LEDs would of been super useful. I'm on a mac using parallels, running XP for the application i'm using. Since i already had the FTDI driver installed, there was no setup, and this worked perfectly first time. I'll thru the other one i had in the circular file, what a waste of time that was.

This is a sweet little USB-RS232 adapter. My old one caused my Windows 7 PC to BSOD at speeds over 38400, but this chipset does not. It also works on my Mac Book Pro. The LED indicators are WONDERFUL!!!! They make troubleshooting connections so much easier. Even programs such as CoolTerm, which show indications on the console window aren't as useful as the indications on the adapter itself. GearMo's website has all the latest drivers for Windows and Mac, which makes installation a breeze.

Works great for old serial port adapters for the Phillips TSU1000 and TSU2000 remotes. I have been using these remotes and programming and organizing buttons on the screen using prontoedit 4 since late 1999. Needless to say, it is hard to find adapters that make the serial port adapter work for these remotes. I came across GearMo and ordered one and not only did it work, it automatically installed without the mini CD. Because of the age of the remotes, you also need to set the port to com1 on windows 64 bit PCs to make it work. If you do this, it takes but a few minutes and you are up and running. I can finally retire my old windows 7 32 bit pc which was hanging around just to edit my remotes. I am ordering a second one now. I highly recommend this device for serial to USB applications.

I have to constantly access serial ports on enterprise computer equipment and the absence of serial ports on laptops was something I had to overcome. This cable not only solves my connectivity problem but also comes with a very handy traffic light to let me know if the ports are even working as soon as I plug the cable in. Gear-Mo updates their drivers so I advise anyone buying this cable to visit their website for the latest driver. As far as configuring it simply follow the documentation for your OS and you'll be on your way.

Only done limited test on this so far but it seems to be a rock solid product. I especially love all the LED's that tell me exactly what is going on at the RS232 layer. BTW the installation on my Win8 64 bit laptop was flawless and fast, didn't even need the included CD for drivers.
Quality Value Price - This was a "Life Saver"
-
First Visual Observations:
The USB to serial adapter was small but attractive in its construction with visible labels on the corresponding LED’s. The serial port enclosure was a translucent blue.
Packaging:
Received the package intact, no damage was found.
Product Operation:
The USBG-FTDI-LED was real simple to use, plug & play installed what I needed right away on my Windows laptop. I had used this serial adapter on older modem that operated through a serial port. Although going back to 56k was a pain the data transmission from the modem connection to the laptop was on the ball and the LED’s worked appropriately. This was a life saver despite the Internet connection time with 56k.
Pros:
The cable adapter is long enough that it stayed where I wanted it when getting the modem set up from the laptop. The LED’s were clear and easily distinguishable do to the darker label. It is portable, coiling up the cable is no big deal and doesn't take up mu room in the bag.
Cons:
No cons, this is a great little device.
Final Comments:
Having trouble with my onboard modem, this was a life saver when having to break out the old separate modem unit to cover my Internet. The USBG-FTDI-LED Serial Adapter was inexpensive which was even better.

Worked great on my Windows 8.1
Quality Value Price - You only need the troubleshooting lights if you run into trouble
-
Yes, this uses the FTDI chip and it works. A Prolific-based unit did not work in the same application. The pretty lights are fun to watch when in operation, but you probably won't need them. As an engineer, like to watch things work so the extra couple of bucks was worth it in case I had to do any troubleshooting. But then you need to have trouble in order to troubleshoot. I didn't have any.
About as "plug and play" as you can get.Quality Value Price - Works very well

I wanted to use this in an amateur radio application.
It performed flawlessly (I have had trouble with other similar devices because of RF energy).Quality Value Price - Not perfect, but pretty good...

I broke this product review up into 5 pieces: design, build, functionality, misc, and summary. There's a TL;DR at the bottom for those who are interested.
Design:
I always prefer to have more information over less, so the status lights are good, but I would prefer that there were different colors. All indicator lights are all amber which kinda bleeds between indicator windows. It's really not that bad though, but I think different colors would help resolve the issue. The TX/RX lights are a tad dim on mine, unknown if this is a standard problem or if I got a few poorly made LED's in the mix. The blue glow from the RS-232 end is pleasant and a nice indicator to know that the board is receiving power from the USB connection.
Build:
Quality wise, this product is okay. The plastic exterior covering for the RS-232 side is a bit cheap feeling and I'm concerned that it may not hold up well in the relatively hostile environment that a data center or server room often is. The black area where the indicator lights are visible feels like it's just a clear plastic sheet, so someone who has huge burly thumbs and no sense of his/her own strength may accidentally punch that film inward.
Functionality:
I tested this device with a Cisco 1841 and 2811 and it worked flawlessly just as expected. The additional driver CD was not needed as my Windows 7 PC picked it right up and assigned it COM6, and away I could PuTTY. The TX/RX lights blink when sending commands and receiving feedback from the routers, so they seem to function as expected. As mentioned above, the only functional change that would have been nice is to have different color lights.
Misc:
Not really a product flaw, but the product description could use a tad bit of work though. It's not misleading, but it's a bit lacking. I had to go to the Questions/Answers section to find out the length, which is long enough for my uses. It also would have been nice to know the LED colors before purchasing. I like the cable material, the outer cable jacket is clear and is nice and flexible.
Summary:
Overall the product is great and I would recommend it to others who have a need for RS-232 connections, don't have serial ports on their modern computers, and are into things that both light up and blink.Quality Value Price - this is the one you want

Don't waste your money on anything with a prolific chipset - they don'tvwork with windows 7 or 8. This unit just plain works! As a net admin I need my serial port to work consistently and so far, this one has been flawless!
Quality Value Price - GearMo Serial Adapter
-
Purchased this serial adapter for use with my Surface Pro2 to mainly use Putty application to configure Cisco gear. It works perfectly for that purpose, I also like that it has status lights and the cord is a good length and not short like some other brands that I have had in the past.
Quality Value Price - Does the job
-
Works perfectly AND with Windows 8 which many other adapters do not. One other adapter on the market will work also but it costs twice as much.
Quality Value Price - so far so good
-
Bought it for a samsung laptop with Windows 7. Was able to configure with no issues to connect to Cisco devices. Likes to come up as COM3, but that is more an annoyance rather than a functional problem. Unit is not too bluky with the blue housing. Did have to load the drivers to get the unit to function correctly
Quality Value Price - Good product. Worked out of the box with linux
-
Spent the extra money for flashing lights, however the lights are upside down. All of the computers I have owned have serial ports that have the short side of the DB-9 connector down. When I plug it in, the lights are facing down, and useless. I should have bought the cheaper one, but this thing functions fine and is recognized automatically by Linux. Can't complain about functionality.
Just look closely at the product photo, then pick any device with a serial port (like rasberry pi) and you will see what I mean.
I would give it five stars if the lights were on the top.Quality Value Price - Works with Raspberry Pi
-
I used this cable with a Raspberry Pi to connect with an 8-bit Atari SIO cable. I did not need the VPC drivers from the FTDI site. Works great!
Quality Value Price - GearMo USB serial adapter
-
Wow! What a great product with visible indicators AND a cable to the USB connector, allowing me to move it away from the laptop. Never any question whether the connection is good. It works very well with both Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines, and the price is outstanding!
Quality Value Price - Love this item
-
This was the reason for my initial purchase, so I was very happy with this item, If I could have just purchased this item alone with free shipping, I would have been very please.
Thanks, GearMoQuality Value Price - Most up to date unit I have found that works with old serial equipment.
-
Works flawlessly compared to the Belkin adapter I replaced it with. Works we'll on all my old serial port stuff I own.
Quality Value Price - Works great in Windows 8
-
Works great, links up just fine with my radio scanner for programming. The PL-2303 adapter I tried previously didn't work at all.
Quality Value Price - Works on one computer, not another
-
I have a few computers. My two main used computers, both Windows 8, have different experiences. My laptop registers this as a microsoft mouse. The other registers it correctly, but this is frustrating as I bought it to use mostly with the laptop. Looks like I'll have to get a different one. At least I have this for my main PC.
Quality Value Price - Saved the day
-
Works great without having to search the internet for drivers that only work every other time you turn the computer on and must be constantly reinstalled. I had to have one that works this great to run outdated hardware for work with out it I would be sunk.
Quality Value Price - Worked great with Windows 8.1
-
Worked just great with the the Dell laptop running Windows 8.1. Would recommend to anyone who needs an adapter to RS-232
Quality Value Price - Worked great with my LP-100A Wattmeter for Ham Radio. You will need a 9 pin straight through serial cable with this.
-
Plug and Play! Most cheap ones do not work. This worked great with my LP-100A Wattmeter for Ham Radio. You will need a 9 pin straight through serial cable with this idem because it has the nuts on both the meeter and the adapter. Think of it as a internal card connection. It was fast delivery thanks!
Quality Value Price - Works great

No issues using this with a Win 7 64bit machine, it works great and gets the job done. The lights are nice to see that its actually doing something, especially if I need to do some troubleshooting with what its connected to.
Quality Value Price - Rock Solid Communication
-
I needed a serial cable to communicate to an Allen Bradley Micrologix PLC and my laptop does not have a RS-232 serial port. I read about some bad experiences people have had with other adapters. It seemed that the general consensus has been to stick with the FTDI chipset adapters.
After looking through some products and reviews, I came across this item. In my opinion, the LED lights to indicate activity was good feature to have for any troubleshooting.
My computer uses the 64-bit version of Windows 7. When I plugged the adapter in, the OS recognized it and downloaded the drivers via Windows update. It defaulted to COM7, so I changed it to COM1 and connected it to the PLC. I auto-configured a DF1 channel in RSLinx Classic and immediately discovered it using RSWho.
I've had it connected to the PLC all day and there have been no issues in the communication. I checked the diagnostics for the channel and there were no bad packets, timeouts, or retries.
This seems like a great product.Quality Value Price - An FTDI based USB to Serial adapter with Status LEDs to show activity
-
I have always had the best results when using USB to serial adapters that are based on the FTDI chipset. This particular adapter uses the FTDI chipset and also has status LED's to show the activity on the lines which can help troubleshoot serial issues.
I would highly recommend this adapter.Quality Value Price - FTDI + Signal lights = Flawless victory
-
After having struggled with corrupt data on my PL2303-based adapter every few minutes, I was suspecting problems with the target device, especially when the problem persisted after swapping adapters, reloading drivers, and trying a different PC.
Lesson learned: Replacing a Prolific chip with another Prolific chip isn't gonna fix it! Go FTDI or go home.
I bought (two of) these and the problems haven't come back; I can receive *megs* of text without so much as a hiccup. Logging over a long weekend used to be completely out of the question, now it's become routine.
And yes, the diagnostic LEDs are every bit as useful as you'd imagine, perhaps more so. Not only do they show you TX/RX and flow control, but they show you *when the port is open at all*, which is super handy if you've got multiple adapters plugged in and you've lost track of which COM port is which. Forget the paperclip loopback! Forget unplugging things to see which port stops responding! Just watch each adapter go all Christmas-tree when you open its respective port, and the mystery is conclusively solved.
My colleague has been using the other one to drive an old board plotter, which had exhibited inexplicable, random, and extremely frustrating bugs for months. Switching to a genuine FTDI adapter made everything suddenly work! The misbehavior is gone, the software doesn't lock up anymore, and we're back to making boards in-house instead of sending them out. Turns out the plotter wasn't bad after all, it was just a cheap serial adapter!
I'm never skimping on cheap serial adapters again.Quality Value Price - Just works!
-
Works great with Win 8.1 64 bit. Didn't use supplied driver disk. it just worked! My application is a simple "Dumb" terminal program running a piece of test equipment. The LED's are great and will really help if problems arise.
Quality Value Price - USB to Serial Adapter.
-
Works as described and the lights are a plus for trouble shooting. Win 7 found and installed with no problems. I use it for TX Using Ham Radio Software.
Quality Value Price - Great Product, works perfectly with Windows 7 32Bit
-
I purchased this cable to interface with a DOS based system. I had another brand of cable that I could not get to work. When I received this cable I plugged it into my Windows 7 PC, Windows installed the drivers that I needed, and that was it... Completely plug and play..
Quality Value Price - Does what it says
-
I purchased this to connect to Cisco consoles. I have had no issues using the serial adapter with Windows 8 or MAC OSX.

Laptops, Desktops, Tablets.... all would cheerfully like scrape off the RS-232 interface from their shoe.
(along with the parallel interface, and the RGB video interface)
It's an interface that - just - won't - die.... along with all the zombie hardware that is still - inconveniently, operational.
On top of that, add 3 or 4 more versions of a psychotic OS's growing ever larger, slower, and less stable...
One must ask one's self "Is one giant leap backward for mankind" really worth it?
Still, if it's cheap enough, ?maybe? it's worth a shot.
Not all USB-RS232 are created equal.
They are OS type/version dependent.
They can be quite particular in their handshake with any given piece of ancient equipment.
On occasion, they will work.
Don't expect much technical support from outer Mongolia when it doesn't.
Just because it works on one device, it may not on others.
Change host device, OS (or, even a service pak) - and, it's instant drawer clutter.
Most will test operational with a RS-232 tester. (which may not mean much for your application).Quality Value Price - Works, doesn't fall apart
-
I needed this for connecting my laptop (which does not have a serial port) to a piece of lab equipment. My windows 7 machine did not need the included drivers (on a mini-disk), it just worked when I plugged it in. I am using LABView to communicate thru the USB adapter to control what the lab equipment settings are, or to communicate status/measurements from the equipment and this works beautifully. The LED's are a nice touch to verify that data is being sent back and forth, which helps when you are setting up for the first time and want to verify communications are working properly.
I haven't beat this up, but it is being used in a work environment and so far this has held up nicely. It's not industrial strength, but it also doesn't feel like it's going to break into pieces if I drop it. I bought several for our lab.Quality Value Price - Not the lights I was hoping for
-
With most RS-232 test jigs you see one color for positive, another for negative, and no light for no signal. The lights on this adapter are only on when the signal is "active" - you don't get any indication if the signal is driven from the other side. So it works, so I still need to carry an RS-232 tester with full lights when I want to diagnose a balky connection
Quality Value Price - Works well, a touch pricey
-
Works correctly and installs easily. If you don't need the lights, then go for a Sabrent unit. It uses the same FTDI chipset but $5 less.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from the Prolific PL2303 adapters. I've yet to get one to work correctly with Wndows Vista, 7, or 8.
-John B.Quality Value Price - works great with Linux
-
I had to use this adapter to connect a laptop (running Debian Wheezy) to a Dell EqualLogic. Worked without a problem.
Quality Value Price - LEDs
-
works with Win8. this is for the professional that needs to talk RS 232. just about any USB/232 device will do. but to have the LEDs showing you whether you have communication, or not??? priceless.
Quality Value Price - USB RS-232 Serial Adapter with LED Indicators
-
I got them fast, well packaged.
They work perfectly, first time / every time.
I bought four more.
Ditto for them as wellQuality Value Price - Great Adapter
-
I use it while programming where serial devices are used. The LEDs indicate all the states of data and transfer. The LEDs also let you know if your device is ready and when data is being transferred. For the price you can't beat it.
Quality Value Price - Works great with Windows 8

I ordered this adapter for two uses: First to use with my old X10 controller at home and second to connect to the console serial port on a piece of test equipment at work.
For the X10 controller, I elected to the USB/Serial adapter on a Windows 8 PC. I created a "restore point" before inserting the mini CD that came with the adapter (just in case!). Then I plugged the adapter into a USB port and surprisingly there was no request to install a driver. So I looked at the Device manager and found that "USB Serial Converter" appeared without having to install the driver from the CD.
I then ran the X10 control software and it found COM4 and worked right away.
I haven't tried the test equipment at work yet, but I don't expect any problems. And the LEDs will be very useful for this.
Very happy with the product and the price.Quality Value Price - Works great with the Computrainer
-
The old Belkin adapter I was using seemed to cause the dreaded BSOD on XP and didn't support Windows 7. This one works great on either OS. With this adapter I can use my Computrainer with a (late 2008) Macbook, running Windows 7 under Parallels. The blinking LEDs are a nice touch -- they let you know it's working!
